Tepezcohuite: Virtues and Properties

Most of our products at Dora's Apothecary feature Tepezcohuite (pronounced ‘tep-ez-co-heety’) our primary healing and regenerative ingredient. Derived from the bark of Mexico’s ‘skin tree’, this organic, all-natural ingredient was used by the Mayans for more than ten centuries to heal and nourish the skin.

What is Tepezcohuite?

Tepezcohuite is a powerful cell regenerator, with high levels of anti-bacterial and analgesic properties. The powdered bark contains large amounts of tannins and bioflavonoids that act as astringents, which fight free radicals and reduce the loss of collagen and elastin.

It also contains micronutrients such as zinc, copper, manganese, iron and magnesium, which play an important role in skin repair and cellular protection.

The ancient Mayan culture used the mimosa tenuiflora bark to treat multiple skin afflictions, including ulcers, varicose wounds, ringworm, sunburn, psoriasis and skin lesions caused by burns.

In 1984, a group of medics witnessed a phenomenon in Mexico City. Hundreds of people had been severely burned in a series of explosions in a gas factory. The Red Cross successfully treated victims by creating poultices containing tepezcohuite powder. Tepezcohuite’s regenerative action on the injured tissues worked wonders: it was so effective that it was used one year later when an earthquake caused a gas explosion in the Aztec capital.
